My name is Boz, and I live in Georgetown, TX. I’ve owned this home for about three years now. Initially, I was living in Austin and moved out here to what—back then—felt like the country, but has been rapidly developing. I work 100% remotely from my home office, Monday through Friday. I really enjoy my lifestyle here—it’s the best of both worlds. You get easy access to the urban life in Austin, but you also get the rolling hills in Williamson County.
I’d say we live an active lifestyle, but it’s also extremely relaxing and relatively quiet compared to where we lived before. Our subdivision is smaller, so it’s not too hustle and bustle. Overall, it’s a really comfortable lifestyle.
Most people know each other, and we have great numbers. Everybody relies on each other and looks out for one another. Having that sense of community is super important. Georgetown really appealed to us because it’s a growing city, but it still upholds its small-town standards and culture. The civic engagement in Georgetown is incredible—what they do with their digital outreach to engage every citizen is fantastic. Knowing you have a say in things is really important.
For me, efficiency is super important, especially energy efficiency. Having a home that’s well-insulated and having access to the necessary tools to keep the home up and running is crucial for us.
One of the cool things about living here is that the builder aimed to make this a smart home. We’re on the cusp of having so many things to manage at our fingertips. The HVAC, the alarm, the lighting, the garage—everything is controlled by phone apps now. It was geared towards digital controls, which I loved as someone who’s addicted to my phone. I can leave town for the weekend, go to San Antonio, and still keep watch over my home, knowing what’s happening. I have a whole-home water filtration system that sends notifications, and now that I have my Base system, I’m on top of the energy output and input.
When we first moved out, I remember saying, “Wow, this place is so far out.” You’d see the cow pastures and horses. Initially, there wasn’t much. Seeing my home start from scratch, from dirt… you’re on top of this hill, and you can see for miles. Now, there’s a lot more traffic, and it’s a bit busier, but that’s hit or miss—I do like the liveliness. It’s still a small-town mentality. One of the biggest attractions in Georgetown is the Georgetown Square—the restaurants, the vibe. It’s somewhere you can take your family. We used to have to drive to get things, but now, things are much closer, so you don’t miss that kind of development. With more demand and residents, you hope the city can handle the growth. One challenge is the strain on energy and water resources. The energy grid has been a big issue since I moved here. In 2022, this community had a lot of blackouts, and everybody experienced it.
Oh yeah, I think everyone in the subdivision has done their research, given the outages we’ve experienced. I looked at the standard Generac systems through Costco, but they’re all gas-powered generators. Ultimately, setting up that whole system didn’t appeal to me, and the price point wasn’t worth it either. So, I held off and did my research. Base checked a lot more boxes for me in terms of value and customer service. Plus, it’s digital-oriented, which I like because I can stay on top of those numbers.
Last year, we had a couple of pretty prolonged power outages. Sometimes they’d happen during a storm, and other times it would be someone driving into a power line. That would cause an outage, and it would take Oncor hours to fix it. Last fall, I was out of town when it happened, and I started getting texts about it. Ironically, my friend who has a Base system told me, “It’s coming through in the clutch here,” which caught my attention. That’s when I started doing more research about Base, and here we are.
The installation process was great. There was a lot of communication about how and when the setup would happen. When the team arrived, they made sure everything was organized, and they clearly outlined what to expect and the timeframe. They did everything within the timeframe, but they took their time to make sure it was done properly. I really appreciated that—often, things like this are rushed, but Base made sure everything was explained, so I had no questions.
We’ve had two major outages since I had Base installed. The most recent one was last Tuesday, and it lasted about two hours. The switch to backup power came immediately with no delay, which I really liked. At 5 o’clock, I got the notification that several subdivisions had been impacted. Neighbors started chiming in, but I didn’t have to be impacted by it at all. It felt great knowing we were protected. I could access the Base app, which provided more information and statistics about the status of the outage and what the battery was doing. It was reassuring to see suggestions on what to do, especially because you never know how long an outage will last.
