Can I be a Base customer if I get solar panels?

Yes, Base serves customers with and without solar. Base’s batteries are easy to integrate with solar panels, and the integration does not affect your warranty or require any rewiring of your solar system.

How long does the battery last during an outage?

Base batteries protect customers from 97% of outages. Depending on household energy usage, outage protection can last from 6 to 24 hours. In the event of an outage, Base notifies customers of their expected battery duration, tips to extend their coverage, and a timeline for grid power restoration.

What safety precautions does Base take? Who is liable for the battery?

Base's hardware is certified to UL standards, the “gold standard” of electrical systems safety for all home appliances, and is also fire safety rated. Base contracts certified, bonded, insured, and licensed electricians. They work under Base’s master electrician, who operates with license #476697. Base also has comprehensive general liability insurance to address any unforeseen incidents. In the unlikely event of a problem, we're prepared to work with you to handle it responsibly. Additionally, Base is in charge of warranty and maintenance.

How does Base make money?

Base operates differently from traditional power companies. Instead of profiting directly from customers, Base earns revenue by using grid-balancing software paired with outage prediction technology. This approach optimizes the Base battery for both grid stability and outage protection.

When the grid is functioning, Base uses its batteries to support grid balancing. This strengthens the grid’s resilience and generates income for Base. By leveraging its network of batteries for grid balancing, Base maintains low rates for members while remaining profitable.

What hardware does Base use? What’s its lifespan?

Base offers a 20-50 kWh capacity battery system with an 11 kW inverter, making it one of the largest home backup systems available. It is built to back up your entire home, covering more appliances than any other home backup solution.

The battery is also certified to UL standards for safety, fire safety rated, and designed for outdoor installation with a 15-year lifespan.

Will I be billed for the charging and discharging of the battery?

No, you will only be charged for your home energy consumption and credited for all of your solar overproduction (if you have solar). Base tracks the energy pulled from the battery separately from your home’s energy consumption, ensuring that you are only billed for your home’s energy use. The battery credit on your bill will reflect the amount Base credits back to you for charging the battery.
